Editor’s note: The President of the United States visited Wayne State University this past Saturday. President Obama was campaigning for Michigan Democrats U.S. Senate candidate Congressman Gary Peters and gubernatorial candidate Mark Schauer. Allen Elya, first-time contributor to Watchdog Wire, joined Scott Hagerstrom and Americans for Prosperity’s peaceful protest in Detroit, against Obama and Peters’ economic and health care policies. Following the video below, Allen offers an on-the-ground report regarding the manner in which the law-abiding protesters were marginalized by police officers this past weekend.
First Amendment zones seem to be spreading in Detroit. You would think after our tax money bailed out Detroit, we, the people, would receive a little better treatment.
Police stated that the publicly tax-funded Wayne State University was declared “federal property” by the Secret Service for Obama’s campaign event for Congressman Gary Peters, and they were acting on federal orders. Others had a right to freely walk right into Wayne State, but we were stripped of our First Amendment right to assembly, and freedom of speech, for our peaceful protest. They wanted us out of sight from the media, and the president’s motorcade.
Law enforcement gave us a designated free speech zone on the south side of the street only. We were denied the opportunity to be on certain public walkways.
We would have liked to have taken our protest where it had a little more impact. The only thing missing was the free speech zone tape. They even tried to kick us off of the sidewalk where we took our stand at; we clearly weren’t a threat. We couldn’t walk around the block if we wanted to.
Thankfully, no instigators on either side made this ugly. We had every intent to be peaceful, and that’s exactly how it played out.
