Reflections on TUHSD from Jason Walsh, Executive Director of Arizona Right to LifePosted: 2014-02-25
When and Where: The meeting will be on 3-3-14, 4:30PM at the Tempe Historical Society.
Update and analysis: The last meeting of the Sex Ed. Committee (Feb. 19th) was to advise and update the Tempe Board members about curriculum issues and questions, prior to the board's normal meeting.
It began with one of the board members, David Schapira, asking the committee whether any members of the governing board requested Planned Parenthood be involved with the process. Their answer was no, but it clear Mr. Schapira posed the question to exculpate himself minimally, but his association with PP is well documented, as is PP's desire to create a legion of progressive candidates http://www.plannedparenthood.org/ppaz/candidate-training-program-37...
Some of the members of the Governing Board had attended the Tempe Mayor's youth town hall meeting and reported back that they believe there is a strong desire among the Tempe youth for "comprehensive" and relevant sex ed material for students that focusses on the pressures of social media and other forms of technology when it comes to sex and youth. Though it was not stated as such, I took away from this that the board was more interested in what the students were saying and wanting, than what SB 1009 states clearly. Obviously, there is enormous pressure on all of our youth from movies, music and social media channels when it comes to sex, but the responsibility to meet those needs does not rest with this committee or the governing board.
Additionally, there was a good amount of time spent talking about what makes a curriculum "comprehensive". The committee's answer was that it met certain criteria across a wide spectrum and that their matrix, or rubric is the National Sexuality Education standards. Call it what you want, this is a matrix with a definite worldview that embraces not just your standard anatomy and physiology focus, but gender identity issues and a board array of other topics that should in no way be taught in public schools. Moreover, on the advisory board is the Director of National Education Initiatives for Planned Parenthood Federation of America and the Director of Training and Curriculum Development of the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN).
However, what I took away the most from this meeting was the singular lack of focus on SB 1009. At then end of the day, the committee and the governing board can talk about age appropriateness, comprehensiveness, medically accurate and so on, but because of SB 1009, the chosen curriculum must be in line with that law. End of story. And that is why we must reiterate again and again that because of Planned Parenthood's overwhelming interest in supporting elective abortion, as well as promoting a sexuality worldview that opens many doors to dangerous and life-altering consequences, any curriculum that the committee hovers over that PP endorses is implicitly beset with legal issues when put up alongside SB 1009. I think the committee and the governing board has shown a dismissive naivety in looking at curriculum options that are destined to not meet the criteria of SB 1009, so I think it would be a positive point, when public comment is welcome, to read the language of 1009 and recite the documented reality of PP being the #1 abortion-provider in this country. It is an oil and water issue. Also, it doesn't matter if the curriculum is an opt-in one either, as was mentioned. That's not the point of 1009.
We hope to see you on the 3rd!!!!
Blessings,
--
