Western Free Press The Hot Spot 5-15-14A number of the candidates for the Republican nomination for governor point to their business experience as a major qualification for holding the highest elected office in the state. One is Scott Smith, the former mayor of Mesa who, among other business pursuits, once served as the CEO of an Arizona real estate and development company. So why do media reports keep popping up saying Smith has unpaid taxes from a number of his business enterprises?Voters will rightly assume that a candidate for governor would know better than to leave a trail of unpaid taxes. Smith needs to answer questions about his tax status. He either owes unpaid taxes or he doesn’t.The most recent story about Smith’s tax troubles appeared recently in the Arizona Capitol Times. Based on Maricopa County Recorder’s Office records, the report said Smith still owes unpaid taxes to the city of Mesa, the very city he served as mayor. The debt goes back more than 14 years.Smith’s explanation sounds more complicated than it should be, but apparently his company was a subcontractor on a project and the contractor left him with a tax bill. The city of Mesa may or may not have written off the debt, but that doesn’t mean a lien has been lifted.Another report, this one from KPNX (channel 12), said two companies with which Smith was associated had liens for unpaid taxes. Smith said he only owned a small share of one of the companies and shouldn’t be responsible for the taxes. He said he was unaware that the other company, which he owns with his wife, had any unpaid taxes.A Smith consultant said the former Mesa mayor is reviewing his business records and would pay any unpaid taxes if he still owes them.Smith boasts of holding an accounting degree and an MBA. Concerned CitizenPhoenix, ArizonaCertainly he knows if he owes any back taxes. Regardless, he should tell the full story to Arizona voters before he continues to ask for their support.http://www.westernfreepress.com/2014/05/15/scott-smith-needs-to-explain-reports-of-unpaid-taxes/
