Some political pundits dispute the value of campaign signs. But one candidate is putting a premium on them: $45.45, to be precise.
State Rep. John Kavanagh, R-Fountain Hills, said 11 of his signs touting his candidacy for state Senate have gone missing. He has reported it as a theft to Scottsdale police, and he's offering a $500 reward for any information leading to the arrest of the person or persons responsible for it.
Kavanagh smells a rat: The 2-foot-square signs went up over the weekend, placed alongside other candidates' placards. But by midweek, only his were missing. They had been placed along Shea Boulevard between Scottsdale Road and 142nd Street, as well as Scottsdale Road around Thunderbird Road.
"Clearly, it's somebody who doesn't want me to be elected," Kavanagh said.
Aside from breaking the law, the person or persons who took the signs subverted the electoral process, a graver offense, in his eyes, Kavanagh said. Thus, the $500 reward.
Kavanagh is term limited in the House and is in a competitive race with Jeff Schwartz for the GOP nomination for the state Senate seat in Legislative District 23, which represents Scottsdale and Fountain Hills.
Anyone with information about the missing signs can call Kavanagh at 480-837-5612 or contact Scottsdale police.
[Editor: given the contentious Forum held at LD23 Thursday night with Kavanagh's opponent spending most of his time on offense against Kavanagh, I would bet it wouldn't be hard to figure out who has their fingerprints on this theft. Not to mention that Jeff Schwartz, claiming to be a Republican and Kavanagh's opponent, donated $500 to Mark Begich, one of the most liberal Democrat Senators who is from Alaska, a swing state, in this current election!]
