This debate occurred between the incumbent AZ Superintendent of Public Instruction and Diane Douglas the challenger. It took place at Burk Basic School in Mesa, AZ on August 5, 2014.
This is the second question of the debate: "Do you agree with the Common Core Standards that are found in the College And Career Ready Standards. The second part of the question is this: Is there any authority in the Constitution for the federal government to impose these educational standards on the states".
Huppenthal begins his answer with "I have never supported the Common Core Standards". The absurdity of this statement is reflected in Diane Douglas' expression. In the background you can clearly see the shock on Diane Douglas' face at the utterance of these words. Douglas begins her answer to the question with "I am just kind of thunderstruck quite frankly..." because Huppenthal has been the number 1 advocate of Common Core Standards in Arizona from the beginning.
You can bet that this "flip flop" is a ruse in the same way that John McCain said "Build the dang fence". Politicians say these things to get elected. They lie because most people don't pay close enough attention to realize they are lying.

I'm betting john huppenthal didn't realize who he was talking to. Remember, he thinks we are a bunch of barbarians.
